Felix Rodriguez

4/10/2006

Rodriguez was suspended for three games by Major League Baseball on Monday for his role in a game against the Mets last week when five batters were hit by pitches. The Washington reliever was ejected after he hit Paul Lo Duca in the eighth inning. That followed a near brawl earlier in the game after Mets pitcher Pedro Martinez plunked Jose Guillen twice.

Rodriguez returned from the disabled list on Tuesday, more than two months after he was hurt stepping out of the shower and underwent arthroscopic surgery on his left knee. The Yankees' lefthander worked a scoreless seventh inning in New York's 2-1 loss to Texas Tuesday night. After his appearance on Tuesday, Rodriguez has a 4.97 ERA in 12 games this season.

On Monday, Rodriguez played catch for the first time since undergoing arthroscopic surgery on his left knee in mid-May. The lefthanded reliever, who ditched his crutches over the weekend, was hurt while getting out of a shower. A July return is likely.

The New York Yankees announced that Rodriguez had arthroscopic surgery Thursday to repair torn meniscus in his left knee. The lefthanded reliever will start a rehab program next week. He will be out for the next 4-6 weeks.

Rodriguez has posted a 5.40 ERA in 11 relief appearances for New York this season.

Following New York's win over Seattle Tuesday, the Yankees placed Rodriguez on the 15-day disabled list with torn meniscus in his left knee. The 32-year-old reliever reportedly suffered the injury while exiting the shower sometime between Monday night and Tuesday afternoon, when he underwent an MRI exam. Team physician Dr. Stuart Hershon diagnosed the injury and suggested Rodriguez undergo surgery, which would sideline him 4-6 weeks.

To replace Rodriguez on the roster, the Yankees are expected to purchase the contract of infielder Russ Johnson from Triple-A Columbus. Rodriguez has posted a 5.40 ERA in 11 relief appearances for New York.
