Hideo Nomo

8/1/2006

Nomo was released by the Chicago White Sox's Triple-A affiliate, the Charlotte Knights, on June 7 and underwent right elbow surgery, is looking to make a comeback next season. The 37-year-old right-hander has not been on a major league roster since 2005 with the Tampa Bay Devil Rays when he went 5-8 with a 7.24 ERA in 19 starts.

The New York Yankees, in desperate need of starting pitchers who are both healthy and somewhat effective, probably weren't encouraged to hear that Nomo didn't survive the third inning in his first start for New York's Triple-A affiliate in Columbus. The 36-year-old righthander pitched two scoreless innings against Norfolk before losing his control. He threw 56 pitches, and only 30 for strikes.

7/27/2005

The Yankees signed Nomo to a minor league contract. In 19 appearances with the Devil Rays this year, Nomo went 5-8 with a 7.24 ERA, allowing 16 home runs in 100.2 innings.

7/26/2005

After being designated for assignment last week, Nomo has been released by the Tampa Bay Devil Rays, making him a free agent. The 36-year-old righthander struggled in 19 outings this season, going 5-8 with a 7.24 ERA. He is 123-109 with a 4.21 ERA in 320 career appearances, incluiding 318 starts.

7/16/2005

The Tampa Bay Devil Rays designated Nomo for assignment on Saturday, just hours after the struggling pitcher allowed seven runs in just 2.2 innings in Friday's 11-6 loss to Toronto. On the seaon, Nomo is 5-8 with a 7.24 ERA. Tampa Bay now has 10 days to trade or release the pitcher.

6/24/2005

Seth McClung will be recalled to start Sunday against the Marlins, which will push the rest of the Tampa Bay rotation back a day. Nomo will now pitch Monday, Scott Kazmir on Tuesday and Mark Hendrickson on Wednesday. Doug Waechter, who will start Friday's series opener against Florida, will go to the bullpen following his start.

4/19/2005

With Mark Hendrickson scratched from his Tuesday start, the Tampa Bay Devil Rays are expected to call on Nomo to face Randy Johnson at Yankee Stadium on Tuesday night. Nomo would be going on three days' rest, though he didn't get through the third inning of his last start against Boston. He threw 75 pitches in a loss to the Red Sox on Friday night.

Moving up a day also sets up Nomo to make two starts this week. Instead of simply facing Texas on Wednesday, the 36-year-old righthander gets the Big Unit and the Yankees on Tuesday and a home start versus Boston on Sunday.
