David Bell

3/18/2006

Bell has been bothered by back spasms this spring, and the Phillies' third baseman is now sidelined indefinitely. He may be out for the start of the new season. Bell, who hasn't appeared in a Grapefruit League game, was planning to play in a minor league game Saturday but was unable to go.

After missing more than a week with back spasms, Bell returned to the Philadelphia Phillies' lineup for Tuesday's game against the Los Angeles Dodgers, going 1-for-2 with a walk and a strikeout. For the season, he is batting .254 with five home runs and 30 RBI in 84 games.

Bell had hoped to return to the Phillies' lineup over the weekend, but as a precautionary measure, he was held out to rest his ailing back. The veteran third baseman has been battling spasms in the back and has not played since July 10. He continues to be listed as day-to-day.

After mising the last two games with back spasms, Bell expects to be back in the lineup Saturday when the Philadelphia Phillies take on the Florida Marlins. Tomas Perez has been filling in for Bell at third base.

Bell missed Sunday's series finale against the Florida Marlins with soreness in his upper back, but he was back in the lineup for Monday's meeting with the New York Mets. The Phillies' third baseman, who has a history of back problems, went 1-for-4 with a strikeout in his return.

Bell's injury isn't a huge concern at this point, but he could miss some time down the road if it lingers like it has in the past. In 24 games this season, he is batting .207 with one home run and nine RBI.

Bell was held out of the Phillies' lineup for Sunday's game against the Florida Marlins, due to soreness in his back. The third baseman, who has a history of back problems, currently is listed as day-to-day, but will be re-evaluated on Monday to determine the extent of his injury.

The Phillies likely will use Placido Polanco at the hot corner in Bell's absence, meaning Chase Utley will see the majority of time at second base. In 23 games this season, Bell is batting just .205 with one home run and nine RBI.
