Tanyon Sturtze

5/17/2006

A recent MRI exam revealed a small rotator cuff tear in Sturtze's right shoulder, and the Yankees' right-hander may face season-ending surgery. The team Web site reports Sturtze will visit Dr. James Andrews on Wednesday to get a second opinion. If Andrews recommends surgery to repair the shoulder, Sturtze could undergo the procedure on the spot, according to general manager Brian Cashman.

The New York Yankees exercised their $1.5 million option on Sturtze for 2006. The 35-year-old right-hander was 5-3 with a 4.73 ERA and one save in one start and 63 relief appearances.

On Thursday, the New York Yankees activated Sturtze from the disabled list after more than a two-week stay for an oblique strain. The righthanded reliever was 1-0 with a 6.10 ERA in six games for the Yankees before he was injured.

To make room for Sturtze's return, New York optioned pitching prospect Sean Henn to Triple-A Columbus after he made his major league debut on Wednesday.

Bothered by a strained left oblique muscle, Sturtze will throw on Tuesday and attempt a bullpen session on Thursday. If he handles both throwing sessions without a problem, the Yankees' reliever will begin a minor league rehab assignment. He was placed on the 15-day disabled list on April 18, so he is eligible to return in the first few days of May.

On Monday, the New York Yankees placed Sturtze on the 15-day disabled list with a strained left oblique muscle. The 34-year-old righthander is 1-0 with a 6.10 ERA in six appearances this season.

To replace Sturtze in the bullpen, the Yankees are expected to recall lefthander Buddy Groom from Triple-A Columbus on Tuesday.
