Troy Percival

2/27/2006

Percival has vacated his locker and left the Detroit Tigers' training camp, possibly for good. The 36-year-old closer hasn't been the same since tearing a muscle near his pitching elbow in 2005, and he's experiencing both significant pain and a substantial loss in velocity this spring. Fully aware that he cannot be effective at the major league level in his current condition, Percival is expected to announce his retirement.

Additional damage to the torn muscle in Percival's forearm has been found, and the Tigers' closer is done for the year. Rehabbing the injury would take at least two months, but surgery still may be required. Undergoing a surgical procedure, however, could mark the end of Percival's career. "It's a very difficult procedure," Tigers trainer Kevin Rand explained. "The success rate of someone coming back from that surgery and pitching isn't very good."

Already on the 15-day disabled list with a partial tear of the right flexor muscle, Percival may now miss the rest of the season. The Tigers' new closer for 2005 landed on the DL for the second time this season when he tore a muscle in his forearm, and now according to doctors, must rest for at least two months. At this point in time, it is unknown if Percival will need surgery to repair the tear. Kyle Farnsworth will likely take over the closer duties for the Tigers.

The Detroit Tigers placed Percival on the 15-day disabled list Thursday, retroactive to July 10, with a partial tear of the right flexor pronator muscle mass. This is the same injury that cost the Tigers' closer nearly a month in May. Percival is 1-3 with eight saves and a 5.76 ERA in 26 games this season.

After missing nearly a month with a partially torn flexor pronator muscle mass in his right forearm, Percival has been activated from the 15-day disabled list by the Detroit Tigers. Prior to his stint on the DL, the veteran closer was 1-1 with three saves and a 3.65 ERA in 12 appearances with the Tigers. Wilfredo Ledezma was optioned to Triple-A Toledo to open a spot on the roster.

Percival moved closer to returning to action after throwing a simulated game on Friday. The reliever has been on the disabled list since early May with a partially torn flexor pronator muscle mass in his right forearm. Before being sidelined, Percival was 1-1 with three saves and a 3.65 ERA in 12 appearances with the Tigers.

After a three-week layoff for a partial tear of the flexor pronator muscle mass in his right forearm, Percival threw roughly 35 fastballs off a bullpen mound on Sunday and mixed in curveballs and breaking balls in his second bullpen session Tuesday afternoon. If he feels fine on Wednesday, the Tigers' closer is expected to work a simulated game on Friday at Comerica Park.

Percival, who has been sidelined for more than three weeks with a partial tear of the flexor pronator muscle mass in his right forearm, reported no major problems after throwing around 35 fastballs off a bullpen mound on Sunday. The Tigers' closer will expand his workouts by tossing some breaking balls over the next couple of days, and if all goes well, he could be facing batters by the end of the week.

On Monday, the Detroit Tigers placed Percival on the 15-day disabled list with a partial tear of his right flexor pronator muscle mass. To replace Percival on the 25-man roster, the Tigers recalled righthander Chris Spurling from Triple-A Toledo. Percival was 1-1 with three saves in five chances and a 3.65 ERA this season.

Ugueth Urbina looks like the primary ninth-inning option for the Tigers with Percival on the sidelines. More should be known in the days ahead about how long Percival will be out.
