Aaron Small

6/17/2006

The New York Yankees designated Small for assignment Saturday. The Yankees right-hander has struggled this season, going 0-3 with an 8.46 ERA in 11 appearances and three starts. "They felt like I was a fish out of water in the bullpen, that I'm more of a starter ...," Small said. "I apologized to (manager) Joe (Torre) for not getting the job done."

Rehabbing a hamstring injury, Small worked four scoreless innings and threw 48 pitches in his second extended spring training start. He struck out four facing Philadelphia minor leaguers in Florida. "The hamstring was perfect," said Small, who ran over to first to cover on a couple of plays during the game.

Small will start the 2006 season on the 15-day disabled list. The Yankees' right-hander has been sidelined with a hamstring injury. The good news is, Small threw off a mound for the first time this spring on Monday. When he will be ready to join the Yankees remains uncertain.

Small, who has been sidelined with a hamstring injury, is likely to start the season on the disabled list. The Yankees' right-hander is improving, but he still won't throw off a mound for at least a week. Small was a pleasant surprise for the Yankees in 2005, going 10-0 with a 3.20 ERA in nine starts and six relief appearances.

The Yankees rewarded Small for his unbeaten season by giving the right-hander a $1.2 million, one-year contract on Tuesday. Called up from the minors at midseason, Small finished 10-0 with a 3.20 ERA in nine starts and six relief appearances for New York.

Tuesday night's performance wasn't pretty -- with Small giving up 10 hits and four earned runs over five innings -- but the 33-year-old righthander improved his record to 9-0 (3.59 ERA) with his win over the Baltimore Orioles. The Yankees' bullpen gave up five runs, but New York held on for a 12-9 victory.

On Sunday, the New York Yankees recalled Small from Triple-A Columbus, where the 33-year-old righthander was 1-4 with a 4.96 ERA in 11 games this season. He also won his only start for Double-A Trenton. Small missed about six weeks with a groin injury earlier in the season.
