Gabe White

3/3/2006

White has told the Minnesota Twins he is retiring. The 34-year-old left-hander finalized the decision after Thursday's exhibition game against Boston. He said his elbow was bothering him and his knee had swelled after running. White was one of Montreal's top pitching prospects in the early 1990s, but injuries have taken their toll over the years.

White will attend spring training this year with the Minnesota Twins after agreeing to a minor league contract Thursday. The left-hander enters his 12th year in the majors and has pitched for five teams. He is 34-26 with a 4.51 career ERA in 570 2-3 innings pitched.

To make room for the Cal Eldred's return from the disabled list, the St. Louis Cardinals designated White for assignment on Sunday. The lefthander posted a 2.13 ERA in six appearances with the Cards, though he allowed 14 hits in 8.1 innings.

The St. Louis Cardinals have purchased White's contract from Triple-A Memphis, filling the roster spot of the struggling Kevin Jarvis. The veteran lefthander, who was waived by the Atlanta Braves late in spring training, has been solid in eight appearances with the minor league club this season, allowing just four hits in 7.1 scoreless innings of work. He's struck out eight, walked one and held opposing batters to a .154 average.

White has plenty of experience at the major league level, but pitching in middle relief, he doesn't have much fantasy value. He split last season between the New York Yankees and Cincinnati Reds, going a combined 1-3 with a 6.94 ERA and one save in 64 relief appearances.
