Charles Johnson

6/14/2005

The Tampa Bay Devil Rays released Johnson on Monday. The 33-year-old catcher was batting .196 (9-for-46) with four doubles as the Rays' backup catcher. The team recalled Kevin Cash from Triple-A Durham te replace Johnson on the major league roster.

An MRI exam of Johnson's tender right shoulder didn't reveal a more serious problem, and the Tampa Bay catcher has traveled with the team to Toronto instead of going on the disabled list. The veteran backstop hasn't played since leaving the Rays' Sunday afternoon contest against Boston, but he is expected to be in the lineup against the Jays on Thursday.

Johnson has been productive as a part-time player since joining the Rays in mid-April. He has gone 4-for-11 (.364) with two doubles, four walks and a .533 on-base percentage in six games.

Johnson left in the third inning of Tampa Bay's Sunday matinee against Boston because of a sore shoulder. The veteran catcher underwent an MRI exam after the game, and a trip to the disabled list is a possibility.

On Tuesday, Johnson returned from a five-day personal leave from the Tampa Bay club, and he has been placed on the active roster. Johnson will press Toby Hall for playing time behind the plate.

The Rays designated Tim Laker for assignment to make room for Johnson, who batted .236 with 13 homers and 47 RBI in 109 games with the Rockies in 2004.

Johnson has yet to rejoin the Tampa Bay Devil Rays, so the club has placed him on the restricted list without pay. The veteran catcher, who signed a one-year contract earlier this week, left the team late Wednesday to attend to a personal matter, and a timetable for his return has not been set. The Devil Rays purchased the contract of Tim Laker to serve as a backup to Toby Hall in Johnson's absence.

Johnson, who began spring training with the Colorado Rockies, was traded to Boston last week and eventually was released by the Red Sox. He then inked with the Devil Rays. Once he rejoins the club, he'll serve as Hall's backup behind the plate.

Johnson was slated to start Wednesday's game against the Toronto Blue Jays, but was scratched just prior to the first pitch after asking the Devil Rays for a leave of absence. Reportedly, the veteran catcher will remain with the club through Wednesday's contest, but will leave after to attend to some personal issues. If Johnson does not return by noon on Friday, he will be placed on the restricted list without pay, according to general manager Chuck LaMar.

Toby Hall will remain behind the plate for the Devil Rays. Johnson, who began spring training with the Colorado Rockies, was traded to Boston last week and eventually was released by the Red Sox. He then signed a one-year deal with the Devil Rays to serve as a backup to Hall. Tampa has an off-day on Thursday.
