John Mabry

5/21/2006

Mabry started at first on Sunday against the Chicago White Sox a day after being sent to the hospital after getting involved in a fight with White Sox center fielder Brian Anderson. Mabry was ejected on Saturday. He was 0-for-4 on Sunday with two strikeouts.

Mabry could see more at-bats for the Cubs after Derrek Lee was diagnosed with two broken bones in his right wrist Thursday. Lee is expected to be in a cast for up to six weeks, and Mabry is one option to play first base. The Cubs also could move Todd Walker to first, which would open up second for Jerry Hairston Jr. and Neifi Perez.

Pirates first baseman Sean Casey wasn't the only player injured in Mabry's collision with him at first base Friday night. Mabry suffered spasms in his shoulder muscles following the collision and was available for pinch-hitting duties only on Saturday and Sunday. The Cubs' reserve player is day-to-day.

Filling in for the injured Reggie Sanders, Mabry took advantage of the added playing time, going a perfect 4-for-4 with a walk and two RBI in Monday's 10-3 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks. The Cardinals' utilityman has appeared in 54 games this season, batting .268 with four home runs and 22 RBI.

Mabry left the Cardinals' win over Philadelphia Wednesday with back stiffness, and the team's starting third baseman didn't play against the Phillies on Thursday. He's been the main man at the hot corner since Scott Rolen suffered a shoulder injury a little more than a week ago. Mabry is hitting .326 (15-for-46) with three doubles, two homers and eight RBI this season.

Mabry is expected to get the majority of the starts at third base for the St. Louis Cardinals for at least the next couple of weeks. He takes the place of regular starter Scott Rolen, who will be sidelined indefinitely after suffering a left shoulder injury when he collided with the Dodgers' Hee Seop Choi in a game earlier this week.

Mabry has appeared in 17 games this season, batting .313 with one home run and three RBI. He will be backed up by Scott Seabol and Abraham Nunez.

Although the Cardinals do not believe a trip to the disabled list will be necessary, Mabry will be limited over the next few days because of a strained left hamstring. The reserve outfielder, who suffered the injury after singling late in Friday's victory over the Philadelphia Phillies, will be evaluated on a daily basis.

The Cardinals are not going to rush Mabry back and risk further aggravation of the injury. He has just two at-bats so far this season. Last year, he hit .296 with 13 home runs and 40 RBI in 87 games.
