Jeffrey Hammonds

6/10/2005

Hammonds, a veteran of 13 big league seasons who played with six different teams, including the surprising Washington Nationals, announced his retirement from baseball on Friday. The fourth overall pick in the 1992 draft by Baltimore, the 34-year-old Hammonds was plagued by injuries over his career. He finished with a .272 average and 110 home runs in 957 games. He hit 21 homers for Baltimore in 1997, and his career year was a .335-20-106 season with Colorado in 2000.

Hammonds was pulled from Sunday's game against the Toronto Blue Jays after pulling his right hamstring while running the bases in the fifth inning. Although the severity of the injury won't be known until he is re-evaluated on Monday, the Nationals have decided to place the outfielder on the 15-day disabled list. Filling his spot on the roster will be infielder Brendan Harris, who was recalled from Triple-A New Orleans.

The Washington Nationals have purchased Hammonds' contract from Triple-A New Orleans, filling the roster spot of pitcher Joey Eischen, who will be out for at least a couple of months with a broken arm. The veteran outfielder was batting .250 with two home runs, nine RBI and one stolen base in 19 games with the minor league club this season.

The Nationals have a logjam in the outfield, so Hammonds likely will serve as a backup and pinch-hitter for the time being. As a result, his fantasy value is highly limited.
