Dave McCarty

5/16/2005

McCarty, who was designated for assignment by Boston in early May, has cleared waivers and elected to become a free agent. The Red Sox used the 35-year-old veteran mostly as a defensive replacement, and he went 2-for-4 in 13 games with Boston.

McCarty never has done much against righthanded pitching, but he may get picked up by a club looking for some bench help that fares well against southpaws.

To make room for Boston's Monday night starter against Detroit, Jeremi Gonzalez, the Red Sox designated McCarty for assignment on Monday morning. The veteran first baseman had been used mostly as a defensive replacement, appearing in 13 games for the Red Sox. At the plate, he was 2-for-4 with a pair of RBI.

McCarty could be traded or released. If he clears waivers, he has the option of going to Triple-A Pawtucket or becoming a free agent. Boston has signed John Olerud to a minor league contract, which makes McCarty expendable.
