Ryan Klesko

4/7/2006

Klesko faces a decision whether to have surgery on his strained left shoulder, which has forced him to start the season on the disabled list. The Padres' first baseman said he'll talk with the team's medical staff, his family and manager Bruce Bochy before deciding if he should have surgery, which could sideline him for two to four months.

The San Diego Padres are debating whether to put Klesko on the 15-day disabled list for the start of the season. The first baseman has been bothered by a sore left shoulder, and he missed his fourth straight Cactus League game on Wednesday. He had a cortisone shot over the weekend to help relieve the discomfort.

Klesko returned to the San Diego lineup Sunday after missing three games (and four starts) with a back and neck injury. A recent MRI exam verified Klesko didn't have a serious injury, and he'll work his way back into the lineup.

Klesko has been absent from the Padres' starting lineup each of the last four games, due to continued problems with his upper back, neck and shoulder. The veteran outfielder/first baseman has just one hit in his last 14 at-bats and is hitting only .208 since the All-Star break.

After missing nearly a week with his troublesome back, Klesko returned to the San Diego Padres' lineup for Tuesday's meeting with the New York Mets, going 1-for-4 with a double, RBI and run scored. The veteran outfielder/first baseman had been absent from the team's lineup for five games.

Klesko could be sidelined through the weekend with his troublesome back, but the injury is not expected to land him on the 15-day disabled list at this point. The veteran outfielder, who was absent from the Padres' lineup for Thursday's meeting with the Pittsburgh Pirates, has been listed as day-to-day.

Klesko has been taking groundballs at first base in recent days, and it's possible he may be moved back to that position with Phil Nevin dealt to Texas. Such a move probably would mean a move to the outfield for Xavier Nady, who has been sharing first base with Mark Sweeney since the Nevin deal went down.

Klesko was back in his regular spot in the Padres' outfield for Tuesday's game against the Cleveland Indians. The veteran slugger, who went 3-for-5 with a double and two strikeouts in his return, had been sidelined the previous three days while battling the upper respiratory infection that is making its way around the Padres' clubhouse.

Battling the upper respiratory infection that is making its way around the Padres' clubhouse, Klesko was scratched from the starting lineup for Saturday's matchup with the Chicago Cubs. The veteran outfielder, who was replaced by Mark Sweeney, should return to action within the next couple of days.

Klesko had just one hit in Wednesday's win over the Cincinnati Reds, but the ball cleared the outfield wall, and the Padres' outfielder notched his third consecutive game with a home run. Over his last eight contests, the Klesko is 10-for-35 (.286) with six homers, 11 RBI and nine walks.

After belting 17 or more homers each season from 1994-2003, Klesko finished with just nine home runs in 2004, primarily because he was slow to fully recover from offseason shoulder surgery. Now that Klesko is back to 100 percent, it appears he has regained his power stroke. For the year, he is batting .259 with eight homers, 21 RBI and one stolen base in 32 games.

After hitting only nine home runs last season, it appears Klesko has regained his power stroke at the plate this year. The Padres' veteran outfielder belted two more home runs in Wednesday's victory over the Colorado Rockies, improving his 2005 season total to six through just 26 contests. He is batting .258 with 14 RBI and one stolen base.

Klesko underwent shoulder surgery following the 2003 campaign and was limited a bit last season, as he recovered from the procedure. He had 17 or more homers each season from 1994-2003, and if he stays healthy, Klesko should top that total again this year.
