Jose Valentin

12/8/2005

Valentin signed a one-year $912,500 contract with the New York Mets on Thursday. The Mets expect Valentin to provide depth for the infield.

On Sunday, the Los Angeles Dodgers placed outfielder Jayson Werth on the 15-day disabled list with a left knee injury and activated Valentin from the DL to take Werth's place. Valentin had been out with three ligament tears in his right knee since early May. He's batting .208 with two home runs, 12 RBI and two stolen bases in 25 games.

In 10 minor league rehab games at Triple-A Las Vegas, Valentin is hitting .367 with a pair of homers.

Sidelined since suffering tears in three different ligaments in his right knee in early May, Valentin has resumed taking grounders and moving laterally, and he's reported no major problems. If the Dodgers' infielder remains on schedule in his recovery, he hopes to be back in action by the end of the month.

An MRI has revealed tears in three ligaments in Valentin's right knee, injuries suffered when he slid into catcher Brian Schneider on a play at the plate in Tuesday's game against the Washington Nationals. Although no surgery is planned at this point, the veteran infielder will miss at least two months of action. The Dodgers have placed him on the 15-day disabled list and filled the void on the roster by recalling utilityman Mike Edwards from Triple-A Las Vegas.

Norihiro Nakamura, Olmedo Saenz and Edwards all could see time at third base in Valentin's absence. Antonio Perez -- close to coming off the DL -- also should figure into the mix. In 24 games this season, Valentin is batting .194 with two home runs, 12 RBI and two stolen bases.

Valentin has been diagnosed with a sprained medial collateral ligament in his right knee, an injury suffered when he slid into catcher Brian Schneider on a play at the plate in Tuesday's game against the Washington Nationals. According to Dodgers manager Jim Tracy, the veteran infielder will undergo an MRI on Wednesday to determine the extent of the damage.

Valentin tried to stay in the game, but after playing defense for one more inning, he was removed because the knee became too sore. Norihiro Nakamura likely will see the majority of the time at third base if Valentin is sidelined. Prior to his departure, Valentin ended his hitting slump at 26 at-bats with an RBI single in the fourth inning.

5/3/2005

Going 0-for-4 in Monday's loss to the Washington Nationals, Valentin extended his hitless streak to 26 at-bats. Over that span, the Dodgers' veteran infielder has seen his season batting average drop from .308 to its current .185. In 23 games this season, he has two home runs, 11 RBI and two stolen bases.

Valentin took a pitch off his wrist just more than a week ago, which could be a reason for his recent struggles at the plate. If Valentin can't get on track, the Dodgers might look to give Norihiro Nakamura more time at the hot corner.

Valentin was hit on the wrist by a Brian Fuentes pitch and left in the eighth inning of Saturday's game against the Colorado Rockies. Subsequent X-rays proved negative, but the Dodgers' third baseman might miss a couple days as a precaution.

Consider Valentin's status day-to-day at this point.

Valentin tied a career high by drawing four walks in Thursday's victory over the San Francisco Giants. The Dodgers' veteran infielder notched a stolen base, two RBI and scored a run despite failing to post an offical at-bat.

Through three games with his new club, Valentin is 3-for-7 with a triple, home run and six RBI. However, he already has three errors. In 125 contests with the Chicago White Sox last season, Valentin batted just .216 and had 85 errors, but he belted a career-high 30 home runs and finished with 70 RBI and eight stolen bases.
