Dan Wilson

9/30/2005

The Seattle Mariners activated Wilson from the 60-day disabled list on Friday, so that the veteran catcher can make one more start before retiring at the end of the season. Wilson, who has been out since May 4, had knee surgery for a torn anterior cruciate ligament. The 36-year-old backstop rehabbed so that he could depart on a healthy note.

After tearing his anterior cruciate ligament on May 4 and sitting out since then, Wilson has decided to retire effective at the end of the year. The announcement all but ends a 14-year career spent primarily with the Seattle Mariners. He currently maintains a career average of .262 with 88 home runs and 519 RBI. More known as a defensive specialist behind the plate, Wilson has a .995 fielding percentage.

The Seattle Mariners have scheduled Dr. Larry Pedegana to perform knee surgery on Wilson. The Mariners' catcher will undergo repair to the torn anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee on May 20. Wilson will face 6-8 months of rehabilitation following the procedure.

Already on the 60-day disabled list, Wilson is done for the year. The remaining question is whether his career is over. The 36-year-old catcher has plenty of time to address that issue.

While running the bases during the seventh inning of Seattle's Wednesday night loss to the Angels, Wilson tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee. The Mariners' catcher may be done for the year and was placed on the 60-day disabled list. Catcher Wiki Gonzalez was recalled from Triple-A Tacoma to replace the 36-year-old Wilson.

In light of Wilson's age, there is talk that his career may be at risk because of this injury. Look for updates as to how Wilson and the M's will proceed.
