Bob Wickman

7/20/2006

Wickman was traded by the Indians to the Atlanta Braves on Thursday in exchange for Class A catcher Max Ramirez. The 37-year-old closer has been successful on 15 of 18 save chances this season. "We had a need to bolster our bullpen," Braves general manager John Schuerholz said.

Wickman agreed to terms with the Cleveland Indians on a one-year, $5 million contract on Wednesday. The 36-year-old All-Star tied a for the AL lead with a career-high 45 saves for the Indians in 2005.

Wickman's return from elbow surgery has gone remarkably well this spring. The Cleveland closer posted his 20th save of the season on Sunday to take over as the American League saves leader. The 36-year-old righthander is 0-1 with a 2.67 ERA in 28 appearances. His strikeouts are down markedly, but Wickman hasn't been about blowing people away with heat for a number of years.

Wickman was unavailable over the weekend after aggravating his back while pitching on Friday. The Indians' veteran righthander has improved significantly over the past couple of days, and he has declared himself ready to resume his duties as the team's closer. In 19 appearances this season, Wickman is 0-1 with a 3.50 ERA and 13 saves. He's struck out eight and walked eight in 18 innings of work.

Wickman entered Wednesday's game against the Chicago White Sox with a 3-0 lead in the ninth inning and appeared to be in line for notching his first save of the 2005 campaign. However, the Indians' veteran closer recorded just one out, surrendered four runs on four hits -- including back-to-back homers to Paul Konerko and Jermaine Dye -- and suffered the loss. He walked one and failed to strike out a batter.

Wickman had a solid spring, allowing just one earned run in nine innings of work. However, there always will be concerns about 36-year-old's elbow problems, as he was limited to 66 appearances over the last three seasons combined. Last season, he went 0-2 with a 4.25 ERA and 13 saves in 30 games.
