Tim Laker

6/23/2006

Laker was designated for assignment by the Indians on Friday. The 36-year-old catcher made four starts during his five-week stint with the club, hitting .308 (4-for-13) with two RBIs. He was signed to a minor league contract by Cleveland in December and was recalled from Triple-A Buffalo on May 20.

Laker has been designated for assignment by the Tampa Bay Devil Rays, in order to make room for Charles Johnson on the active roster. The Rays have 10 days to trade, release or ask waivers on him. Laker was 0-for-1 with a strikeout in his only plate appearance with the Rays.

The Tampa Bay Devil Rays have purchased Laker's contract from Triple-A Durham. The catcher fills the roster spot of veteran Charles Johnson, who was placed on the restricted list after leaving the team to attend to some personal matters. Laker batted .214 with three home runs and 17 RBI in 43 games with the Cleveland Indians last season.

Laker missed most of spring training after breaking a bone in his left hand in late February. He has since recovered and will serve as starter Toby Hall's backup in Johnson's absence.
