Greg Colbrunn

5/27/2005

On Thursday, Colbrunn underwent successful back surgery for a herniated cervical disk. He should be able to return to baseball activities in about eight weeks, and the Texas DH-first baseman may be ready for game action by late August or September. Colbrunn has been the disabled list all season.

After starting the season on the disabled list following offseason wrist surgery, Colbrunn has been diagnosed with a herniated cervical disk. He continues to undergo tests to determine if back surgery is necessary. If he goes under the knife, the earliest Colbrunn would return is August.

Colbrunn's rehab from offseason wrist surgery has been slowed by a forearm strain that probably will force the Texas DH-first baseman to extend his minor league rehab assignment. The 35-year-old veteran has been sidelined for a week by the forearm injury, but he should resume playing for Triple-A Oklahoma within a few days.

Colbrunn remained at extended spring training to continue his rehab program, as he recovers from offseason surgery on his right wrist. The Rangers' infielder reportedly has shown significant improvement over the past several days, and barring any setbacks, he should join Triple-A Oklahoma in the near future and expand his workouts. A timetable for his return to the Rangers' roster still has not been set.

When healthy, Colbrunn is expected to serve as a backup for the Rangers, seeing time at first base and designated hitter. In 13 seasons in the major leagues, Colbrunn has batted .289 with 98 home runs and 422 RBI in 992 games. He was limited to just 20 contests by his wrist injury last season.
