Matt Stairs

7/31/2006

The Rangers acquired first baseman-outfielder Matt Stairs from the Kansas City Royals on Monday for minor league right-hander Joselo Diaz.

Stairs hasn't started for the Kansas City Royals for a few days because of a left hamstring strain. In his first appearance since Thursday, Stairs pinch-hit in the ninth inning and grounded out to end Monday night's loss to the Minnesota Twins. In 100 games this season, he is hitting .264 with 11 home runs and 50 RBI.

Stairs strained his right calf in Kansas City's loss to Cleveland on Tuesday. The veteran outfielder-first baseman, who is batting .263 with 11 home runs and 44 RBI in 90 games for the Royals, is listed as day-to-day.

With Kansas City playing interleague series in San Francisco and Arizona this week, the DH slot is not an option. That means Mike Sweeney probably will spend most of the week at first base and Stairs and the Royals' other DH options will be squeezed for playing time.

Stairs was not in the Royals' lineup on Thursday and he'll likely sit out at least another day or two, due to tightness in his right hamstring and stiffness in his back. The veteran slugger has been nursing the back problem since last weekend and suffered the hamstring injury chasing down a ball in Wednesday's game against the Detroit Tigers. He is 3-for-7 with a double, walk and three strikeouts in two games this season.

Stairs will receive treatment and be evaluated on a daily basis to determine his status and availability. Emil Brown will fill the void in right field until Stairs feels good enough to give it a go.
