Royce Clayton

3/27/2006

Washington's starting shortstop, Cristian Guzman, was placed on the 15-day disabled list Monday. He is out with a right shoulder injury and will miss the start of the season. Clayton will get the nod at short on opening day, and it could be a long-term gig. Guzman is hoping to avoid season-ending surgery with rest and rehab work, but it's possible he will not play at all in 2006.

Clayton finished a home run shy of hitting for the cycle in Tuesday's loss to the Florida Marlins, going a perfect 4-for-4 with three RBI. Over his last four games, the Diamondbacks' shortstop is 9-for-17 (.529) with two doubles, one triple and six RBI.
