Mike Mussina

7/2/2006

Mussina said he felt fine on Saturday, one day after leaving his start early because of a slight strain in his right groin. The Yankees right-hander had allowed no hits through four innings against the Mets. He hopes to make his next scheduled start on Wednesday against Cleveland.

6/26/2006

Mussina reached a pitching milestone Sunday when he recorded the 2,500th strikeout of his career in the first game of a day-night doubleheader against the Florida Marlins.

10/1/2005

With the Yankees clinching the A.L. East on Saturday, Mussina will not pitch in the regular season finale on sunday. Instead, he will reportedly be the Game 1 starter on Tuesday against either the White Sox, Angels or Indians. Jaret Wright will make the start Sunday in the season finale against the Red Sox.

9/23/2005

Mussina had a successful return to the New York Yankees' starting rotation on Thursday. The veteran righthander, who had missed more than three weeks with elbow discomfort, lasted six innings in a victory over the Baltimore Orioles, allowing just one unearned run on four hits. He struck out six and did not walk a batter.

9/22/2005

Mussina takes the mound against Baltimore on Thursday night, starting for the Yankees for the first time since August 29. Temporarily sidelined by elbow discomfort, Mussina is 12-8 with a 4.34 ERA in 28 starts this season.

9/20/2005

Mussina worked another successful bullpen session on Monday, and the Yankees' righthander is set to rejoin the New York rotation on Thursday or Friday. He hasn't pitched for the Yankees since August 29, as he has been sidelined by elbow discomfort. Mussina is 12-8 with a 4.34 ERA in 28 starts this season.

9/17/2005

Mussina said he felt fine after throwing 100 pitches in a bullpen session on Friday. Barring any setbacks, the righthander could return to the Yankees' rotation on Thursday.

9/14/2005

After playing catch on three straight days, Mussina worked his first bullpen session Tuesday since he was sidelined by elbow discomfort. He threw 43 pitches with his right elbow wrapped. If he feels good on Wednesday, he'll have another bullpen session on Friday.

9/12/2005

Mussina played catch for the third consecutive day on Sunday, and the Yankees' righthander didn't have any trouble with his elbow. He will work a full bullpen session or a simulated game on Thursday or Friday, setting him up for a start five days after that. A return against Baltimore on September 20 or 21 is the plan if Mussina doesn't experience a setback.

9/10/2005

Mussina is scheduled to play catch for a second straight day on Saturday. If all goes well, the Yankees' starter intends to throw a bullpen session on Tuesday with the expectation of returning to the team's rotation during the final homestand of the year, which runs September 19-25.

9/4/2005

Mussina has been diagnosed with tendinitis in his right elbow, and the Yankees' righthander said he expects to miss at least a couple of weeks. He also said there is a possibility that he could be shut down for the rest of the regular season. For now, the team will continue to evaluate him on a start-by-start basis.

8/31/2005

Mussina will miss his next start with slight inflammation in his right elbow. It has bothered him on and off this season, but the Yankees' righthander has been able to pitch through it so far. He is coming off his shortest outing of the year, throwing just 64 pitches in three innings while giving up four earned runs to Seattle on Monday. Aaron Small is projected to take his spot on Sunday, but that may change should the Yankees find another alternative.

5/7/2005

Mussina threw a four-hit shutout against the Oakland A's on Saturday. It was Mussina's 22nd career shutout, but his first since August 17, 2003, which also was the last time a Yankees starting pitcher threw a complete game.

This was Mussina's second straight strong start. In his last two games, Mussina has gone 16 innings, allowing just two runs on nine hits.

4/22/2005

Mussina allowed fewer runs in two of his three previous starts, but it took until start No. 4 for the Yankees' righthander to nail down his first win of the new season. He worked just 5.1 innings and allowed 10 hits and three runs, but he was the winner of a 4-3 decision over Toronto on Thursday.

Mussina allowed just two runs in two previous starts, but the Yankees have scored just 10 runs for him in his four starts combined. The 37-year-old righthander also has been very hittable, allowing 33 hits in 22 innings of work. Batters have hit .363 against in 2005.
