Roberto Hernandez

7/31/2006

After stellar setup man Duaner Sanchez was injured in a taxi accident, the New York Mets quickly found some bullpen help Monday by acquiring Hernandez from the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Hernandez hasn't pitched in an exhibition game because of a sore right shoulder, but he told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette that he is almost ready to work in a game. The Pirates' reliever threw on the side Sunday and is expected to do so again Tuesday.

Hernandez finalized his $2.75 million, one-year contract with the Pirates on Thursday after the reliever passed a physical. The veteran chose the Pirates over the Yankees because he expects to pitch in more late-inning situations with Pittsburgh.
