Tino Martinez

11/8/2005

The Yankees have declined their $3 million option on first baseman Tino Martinez. The veteran played for New York during the 2005 season, batting .241 with 17 home runs and 49 RBIs in limited duty. Because Martinez was a backup at first to Jason Giambi, the team felt that it could reduce payroll by letting him go.

Martinez made his first appearance since August 31 on Thursday, entering the Yankees' 9-5 win over Tampa Bay as a defensive replacement and getting an at-bat. The Yankees' first baseman grounded to short in the ninth inning.

Out since August 31 with a nagging ribcage injury, Martinez took batting practice for the first time on Tuesday. The Yankees' first baseman said he's probably ready to pinch-hit, but he's not ready to return to the New York lineup.

Martinez has been slow to heal from his ribcage injury. The Yankees' first baseman was expected back early this week, and now it's unlikely he will be ready to face Boston during this weekend's series at Yankee Stadium. Martinez may try hitting off a tee on Friday before the Yanks-Red Sox opener.

Martinez will be out of the New York Yankees' lineup for a few days with a ribcage strain he suffered on Wednesday against Seattle. It's uncertain he will play in any of the Yankees' contests in Oakland this weekend.

Not to be outdone by Bobby Abreu of the Phillies, Tino Martinez drilled his sixth home run in seven games on Saturday against the A's. The Yankees have won seven games in a row, highlighted by the power of their lefthanded first baseman. The 15-year veteran is now hitting .275 with 10 home runs and 26 RBI in 33 games this season.

In the Yankees' 13-9 win over Seattle on Wednesday afternoon, Martinez homered for the fifth straight game. The 37-year-old first baseman lifted a three-run shot into the short porch in right field off Matt Thornton to pull the Yankees even at 9-9 in the fourth inning of the slugfest.

Those five homers in five games have driven in 11 runs for the Yankees, who now have won five straight games. For the season, Martinez is batting .266 with nine homers and 21 RBI. He's more than doubled his homer and RBI totals in the last five days.

5/10/2005

Martinez has picked it up over his last 12 games, batting .343 and finding a power stroke in more recent days. The Yankees' first baseman has homered in three straight games, and in five of his last seven contests. His hot bat has bumped his average to .259, and he now has seven homers and 16 RBI for the season.
