Jason Grimsley

6/12/2006

Grimsley was suspended 50 games by Major League Baseball on Monday for violating the Joint Drug Prevention and Treatment Program after making statements to authorities about human growth hormone. The reliever was released by the Diamondbacks after his home was searched by federal agents following his admission that he used human growth hormones, steroids and amphetamines.

The Arizona Diamondbacks released Grimsley on Wednesday. The 38-year-old pitcher's release came one day after his home was searched by federal agents following his admission he used human growth hormone, steroids and amphetamines. Grimsley's agent Joe Bick reportedly said he thought this release would end the veteran reliever's career. "My guess is Jason's done playing" Bick said.

The Orioles have activated Grimsley from the 15-day disabled list. The reliever, who has been sidelined for most of the season after undergoing surgery on his pitching elbow, had been placed on the DL on Aug. 25 with a strained Achilles tendon. He has appeared in 14 games for Baltimore on the season, going 1-1 with a 7.98 ERA.

On Thursday, the Baltimore Orioles activated Grimsley from the 60-day disabled list following Tommy John surgery last October. He is returning far ahead of schedule from the procedure. To make room for Grimsley's return, the Orioles designated reliever Steve Reed for assignment.

Although he is still several weeks away from seeing game action, Grimsley continues to be ahead of schedule in his recovery from offseason surgery on his pitching elbow. On Tuesday, the Orioles' righthander, who currently is on the 60-day disabled list, threw off the mound on consecutive days for the first time since going under the knife.
