John Olerud

8/17/2005

Olerud has been activated from the 15-day disabled list by the Red Sox. The first baseman is returning from a strained left hamstring. Kevin Youkilis was sent down to Triple-A Pawtucket to make room for Olerud.

The Boston Red Sox placed Olerud on the 15-day disabled list Wednesday with a mild left hamstring strain. He injured the hammy running the bases in the seventh inning of Boston's 4-3 win over Minnesota on Sunday. The first baseman, who was batting .287 with three homers and 18 RBI in 87 at-bats for Boston, has a history of hamstring problems.

Olerud went 3-for-6 with an RBI in his Red Sox debut on Saturday, when Boston romped to a 17-1 win over the New York Yankees at Yankee Stadium. The 36-year-old first baseman, who finished last season with New York, singled to right in his first major league at-bat since last fall.

It was thought that Olerud was roughly a week away from joining the Boston Red Sox, but the Boston Globe is reporting that a team source says the veteran first baseman could arrive from Triple-A Pawtucket as soon as this weekend. That would be just in time to have Olerud face his 2004 team -- the New York Yankees.

Olerud has signed a minor league contract with the Boston Red Sox. The veteran first baseman has been rehabbing from offseason surgery to repair torn ligaments in his left foot. He suffered the injury while playing for the New York Yankees during last fall's American League Championship Series.

The lefthanded-hitting Olerud will report to Boston's spring training complex in Florida. He is nearly 100-percent healthy and will spend a week or so in Florida before being assigned to the Red Sox' Triple-A or Double-A affiliate for some game action.
