Al Leiter

3/19/2006

ESPN reports Leiter will retire Sunday after pitching the seventh inning of the Yankees' Grapefruit League game against the Indians.

1/6/2006

Leiter and the New York Yankees agreed to a minor league contract Friday. The 40-year-old left-hander has spent 19 seasons in the majors with four different teams. After pitching in 17 games for Florida to open 2005, Leiter finished last season with the Yankees, going 4-5 with a 5.49 ERA in 16 games for New York. He will get a $1.5 million, one-year contract if added to the Yankees' 40-man roster.

Leiter had a successful relief stint for the Yankees in Toronto on Sunday. It was the second relief appearance of the month for the New York lefthander, who will be tried as a one-out lefty specialist by Yankees manager Joe Torre.

Leiter has been traded to the New York Yankees and will be the starting pitcher when the Yanks take on the Boston Red Sox Sunday. Terms of the trade have not yet been announced, but the Yankees are expected to pick up most, if not all, of the pitcher's remaining salary for this season.

The Florida Marlins designated Leiter for assignment Thursday, possibly marking the end of his 19-year career. The 39-year-old lefthander went 3-7 with a 6.64 ERA in 16 starts and a relief appearance. Battling control problems all season, he gave up 88 hits and walked 60 in 80 innings.

After making one relief appearance last Tuesday, Leiter will return to the Marlins' rotation, with Josh Beckett landing on the disabled list.

6/18/2005

Leiter's bullpen stint may be short-lived, as he has been named as Sunday's starter, replacing Josh Beckett, who has been placed on the 15-day disabled list with a blister problem. Leiter had not been expected to get another turn in the rotation until June 25. The lefthander has struggled this season, going 2-6 with a 6.75 ERA.

With two days off over the next week, the Florida Marlins will go with a four-man rotation briefly and place Leiter in the bullpen. The 39-year-old lefthander was the obvious choice for bullpen duty. While none of the other four Marlins starters has an ERA higher than 3.13, Leiter is 2-6 with a 6.75 ERA in 12 starts. The lefty has allowed 41 walks and fanned 36 in 57.1 innings this season.
