David Wells

5/31/2006

Wells was put on the 15-day disabled list on Tuesday after the Boston left-hander experienced soreness on his right knee after pitching on Monday. The 43-year-old left his last start on Friday after taking a line drive off his knee. He is 0-1 with an 8.64 ERA in two starts.

5/29/2006

The Red Sox left-hander will miss a turn in the rotation because of a sore right knee. Wells left his last start after taking a line drive off his knee. He'll miss his scheduled start on Wednesday. He experienced soreness while throwing on flat ground Monday.

5/26/2006

Wells was activated from the 15-day disabled list by the Red Sox, as he prepares to make his first start since April 12 on Friday against the Tampa Bay Devil Rays. The 43-year-old right-hander was sidelined with a sprained right knee.

5/22/2006

Wells is reportedly set to pitch again Friday night after spending most of the season on the disabled list with a right knee injury that limited him to one ineffective start. The Boston Red Sox left-hander, on the disabled list since April 15, will start against the Tampa Bay Devil Rays in the opener of a three-games series, manager Terry Francona said Monday. "Is he going to be 100 percent sharpness? Maybe not," he said. "But that arm still works unbelievably well."

5/17/2006

Rehabbing a surgically repaired right knee, Wells threw 82 pitches in a four-inning simulated game on Tuesday. The Boston left-hander will make a minor league rehab start for Triple-A Pawtucket Sunday, according to the Red Sox's Web site. Manager Terry Francona has said Wells will make one or two rehab starts for Pawtucket. If he rejoins the Red Sox after Sunday's outing, Wells could be back as soon as May 26 to start against Tampa Bay.

5/1/2006

Wells continues to rehab a surgically repaired right knee that went under the knife over the winter. The Boston left-hander received the last of a series of cortisone injections Saturday, but he's still a ways away from returning. He's in his second stint on the disabled list and hasn't pitched since making his 2006 debut on April 12.

4/12/2006

Wells was activated from the 15-day disabled list by the Red Sox on Wednesday to start against the Toronto Blue Jays. The 42-year-old southpaw was rehabbing from offseason knee surgery. Entering his 20th season in the majors, Wells was 15-7 with a 4.45 ERA in 30 starts with Boston in 2005.

4/5/2006

Wells, who threw on the side Wednesday, will start Friday night for Triple-A Pawtucket. The 42-year-old left-hander, who is coming back from offseason knee surgery, is scheduled to make his first start for the Red Sox on April 12 against Toronto.

4/2/2006

The Red Sox placed Wells on the 15-day disabled list Saturday. The starting left-handed pitcher was placed on the DL retroactive to March 28 and is expected to make his first start on April 12.

3/17/2006

Wells made his first game appearance of the spring Thursday, following offseason surgery on his right knee. The Boston left-hander said he felt "pretty good" after his outing.

3/6/2006

Wells has rescinded his offseason request to be traded. The Boston left-hander will stick with the Red Sox, though he also said Sunday that it's "99.9 percent" likely that the upcoming season will be his last. Wells, who turns 43 on May 20, was 15-7 with a 4.45 ERA for Boston in 2005, his 18th year in the majors.

10/21/2005

Wells is expected to have surgery on his right knee in upcoming weeks. The Boston lefthander was bothered by the knee late in the season and endured cortisone shots, the last of which was administered on September 21. He pitched through the discomfort and finished with a 15-7 record and 4.45 ERA in 30 starts.

9/20/2005

An inflamed right knee left Wells at less than his best on Monday, and the Boston lefthander lasted just 2.2 innings against Tampa Bay. He gave up 10 hits, two walks and four earned runs before departing in the third.

9/5/2005

Wells returned from his six-game suspension Sunday and pitched a complete game in a 5-1 win over Baltimore at Fenway Park. The 42-year-old lefthander scattered seven hits and struck out four to improve his record to 12-6 with a 4.24 ERA in 25 outings.

8/29/2005

Wells has started to serve his time for the six-game suspension he received in July for making contact with two umpires during a game. He lost his recent appeal, so the Red Sox' lefthander will be out of action until Saturday, when he will start at home against Baltimore. Well is 11-6 with a 4.44 ERA in 24 starts this season.

8/23/2005

Wells will have his appeal of his six-game suspension heard tomorrow.

7/15/2005

Wells was suspended for six games by Major League Baseball on Friday for making contact with two umpires during a game against Toronto on July 2. The Boston lefthander also was fined an undisclosed amount of cash.

6/27/2005

Wells tweaked the arch of his right foot Sunday while running the bases during Boston's 12-8 victory over Philadelphia. While the lefthander aggravated an injury that sent him to the disabled list for two-plus weeks in late April, the Red Sox don't believe it is as serious this time.

6/15/2005

In Boston's 7-0 blanking of Cincinnati Tuesday night, Wells carried a no-hitter into the sixth and worked seven one-hit innings en route to his fifth win of the year for the Red Sox. Ryan Freel's two-out single in the sixth broke up the no-no before Mike Timlin and Keith Foulke came on to complete the one-hitter.

5/18/2005

Wells was activated from the disabled list Wednesday to start against the Oakland Athletics that evening. The 42-year-old lefthander, who will oppose Oakland's Seth Etherton on Wednesday, is 2-3 with a 4.91 ERA in five starts for Boston this season. He has been on the DL for a sprained right foot he injured on April 25.

5/17/2005

There hasn't been an official announcement, but the Boston Globe is reporting that Wells will return from the disabled list Wednesday night to start for Boston in Oakland. A Wednesday start would mean Wells missed just three weeks for the sprained right foot he injured on April 25.

Wells threw a scaled-back bullpen session of about 35 pitches yesterday and then deemed himself ready to pitch without limitation. Perhaps you shouldn't expect more than about five innings on Wednesday from Wells, who turns 42 on Friday. He is 2-3 with a 4.91 ERA in five starts in 2005.

5/15/2005

Red Sox manager Terry Francona has stated that he will not decide for a few days as to whether or not Wells will be activated in time to start Wednesday at Oakland. Wells threw three simulated innings on Friday and reported no pain or tightness in his right foot. Wells remains on the 15-day disabled list after spraining his right foot on April 25.

With Wells just coming off the DL, and his status still up in the air, perhaps it's a good idea to wait one more week before getting him back in your lineup.

Wells reportedly sprained his right foot while attempting to field a slow roller during the fourth inning of Boston's 8-4 loss to Baltimore on Monday. That was manager Terry Francona's diagnosis before Wells went to a Boston hospital for X-rays. Well tried to stay in the game, but left after giving up a home run to the Orioles' B.J. Surhoff. The lefthander returned to the Red Sox' clubhouse late Monday, limping noticeably and wearing a protective boot on his right foot.

Wells entered the game riding a 15-inning scoreless streak, but that ended with the Orioles scoring one in the first, two in the second and three in the fourth before the lefthander's departure for X-rays. Wells seems certain to miss at least one start, and quite possibly more than that.

Wells, who sprained his right foot in pursuit of a Javy Lopez groundball on Monday, could be out as long as a month or more, Boston manager Terry Francona said on Tuesday. The 41-year-old lefthander is headed for the 15-day disabled list.

Lefthander John Halama is expected to take Wells' spot in the rotation and start next Tuesday at Detroit. Lenny DiNardo will be recalled from Triple-A Pawtucket and replace Halama in the bullpen.
