Benito Santiago

6/17/2005

The Mets signed Santiago to a minor league contract on Friday. The 40-year-old catcher will work out at the Mets' training complex in Florida before reporting to Triple-A Norfolk. Santiago batted .261 (6-for-23) in six games for the Pirates this season before he was released on May 8.

After failing to find another club interested in a trade, the Pittsburgh Pirates released Santiago on Sunday. Last week, the veteran catcher refused to go on a minor league rehab assignment, as he continued to recover from a viral infection. Humberto Cota and David Ross will continue to handle the duties behind the plate for the Pirates going forward.

The 40-year-old Santiago appeared in just six game prior to his stint on the disabled list, batting .261 with a double and triple. He becomes a free agent and can sign with any other team.

Santiago refused a minor league rehabilitation assignment on Saturday. Instead, the veteran catcher will keep working out with the Pirates. Santiago was eligible to come off the 15-day disabled list Saturday after being sidelined with a viral infection. Santiago lost about five pounds due to the illness, but has regained the weight.

Santiago's refusal to accept the rehab assignment could delay his return, as Lloyd McClendon disagrees with the catcher's assessment that he is in good enough shape to return to the active roster.

Santiago has been battling a viral infection the past several days, and the Pittsburgh Pirates have decided to place him on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to April 15. The veteran catcher, who is 6-for-23 with a double and a triple in six games this season, will be replaced on the active roster by Humberto Cota.

David Ross, acquired from the Los Angeles Dodgers, has been playing well with the Pirates and likely will see the majority of time behind the plate. Cota will handle the backup duties.
