Julio Franco

4/21/2006

Franco stroked a two-run pinch-hit homer Thursday in the Mets' 7-2 win over the San Diego Padres. The dinger made him the oldest player in major league history to hit a home run. Franco, playing in his 22nd big league season, turns 48 on Aug. 23. "That won't be the last home run I hit, and I hope I hit one when I'm 50," said Franco, who has four career pinch-hit homers.

Making a pinch-hit appearance in the eighth inning of Monday's win over the Florida Marlins, Franco connected for a grand slam -- the eighth of his major league career. The Braves' first baseman, who turns 47 in August, is batting .276 with six home runs, 20 RBI and four stolen bases in 49 games (116 at-bats) this season.

Franco became the oldest player in major league history to steal a base when he swiped two on Friday against the Reds. On Saturday, Franco hit two home runs in a game for the first time since 1996. Franco hit a solo home run off Reds pitcher Eric Milton in the first inning, and then a two-run shot in the third, also off Milton.
