Anderson Hernandez

4/20/2006

Before the Mets opened a weekend series with the Padres Thursday night, Kaz Matsui came off the disabled list and Hernandez went on it with a bulging disc. The Hernandez move was retroactive to Tuesday. The Mets' rookie infielder had been a late scratch before Tuesday's loss to Atlanta because of back spasms.

Hernandez may get a chance to start at second base to open the season. The Mets' prospect or fellow rookie Jeff Keppinger will get the assignment after Kaz Matsui sprained the MCL in his right knee while sliding Thursday. Matsui will not take part in baseball activities for the next three weeks.

The Mets purchased Hernandez' contract from Triple-A Norfolk on Saturday. With the Mets all but out of the N.L. wild-card race, the 22-year-old infielder should see some playing time at second base, as Kaz Matsui and Chris Woodward are battling injuries.
