Freddie Bynum

6/25/2006

Bynum was placed on the 15-day disabled list with shoulder inflammation on Sunday and will remain in a Minneapolis hospital until at least Tuesday. The Cubs' outfielder left Saturday's game with swelling in his right arm and was taken to the hospital. Tests looking for blood clots were inconclusive, but Cubs' trainer Mark O'Neal said Bynum "has had a history of some swelling and blood issues in his throwing arm. It was handled surgically when he was in Oakland."

The Oakland Athletics dealt Bynum to the Chicago Cubs in a three-team deal also involving the Texas Rangers. Bynum and and left-hander John Rheinecker were sent to Texas for right-hander Juan Dominguez. The Rangers then dealt Bynum to the Cubs for lefty John Koronka.

With Oakland shortstop Bobby Crosby (left ankle sprain) and center fielder Mark Kotsay (bad back) sitting out games on Sunday and Monday, the A's recalled Bynum from Triple-A Sacramento. The utilityman, who was drafted as an infielder and has learned to play in the outfield, was hitting .278 with a .347 on-base percentage in 102 games for Sacramento.
