On Sunday, the Baltimore Orioles placed Sammy Sosa on the 15-day disabled list and recalled Freire from Double-A Bowie. The 31-year-old first baseman was 5-for-13 (.385) in three games with Bowie, following a three-week stint with Baltimore, during which he was 6-for-21 (.286). The long-time minor leaguer spent the first four months of the season with Triple-A Ottawa, where he was a .299 hitter with 19 home runs and 69 RBI in 106 games.

With B.J. Surhoff returning to the active roster from the disabled list, Freire was optioned to Double-A Bowie. Freire saw action in seven games for Baltimore, collecting five hits and one RBI in 20 at bats.

The Baltimore Orioles recalled Freire on Tuesday, and the 30-year-old first baseman made his major league debut by starting Tuesday night's 5-2 win over Tampa Bay. Freire went 0-for-4 as the Orioles' designated hitter.
