8/4/2006

After blowing saves in three consecutive appearances, Carmona will retain his role as closer, Indians manager Eric Wedge said.

Carmona has an 0.63 ERA over his last 13 relief appearances, allowing one earned run over 14 1-3 innings with 11 strikeouts.

Carmona's initial cup of coffee in the majors lasted a day, as the Cleveland Indians optioned the 21-year-old righthander back to Triple-A Buffalo on Monday. Carmona arrived on Sunday, but was optioned out on Monday without pitching, in order to make room for Rafael Betancourt, who is returning from a suspension for performance-enhancing drugs.

Carmona has been recalled from Triple-A Buffalo by the Cleveland Indians, filling the roster spot of fellow righthander Kazuhito Tadano, who was optioned to the minor league club on Sunday. In 14 starts with Double-A Akron, the 21-year-old Carmona went 6-5 with a 4.07 ERA. He then was promoted to Buffalo, where he posted a 2-0 record with a 2.57 ERA in three starts.
