The Florida Marlins optioned Vargas to Triple-A Albuquerque Monday and recalled fellow lefty Renyel Pinto to take his roster spot. Vargas appeared in nine games for the Marlins, including five starts. He went 1-1 with a 6.40 ERA, giving up 36 hits and 25 walks in 32 1-3 innings.

Vargas had the best outing of his young career on Sunday against the Dodgers. The southpaw gave up only one earned run and threw his first career complete game in the Marlins' 7-1 victory. He allowed six hits and walked one, while striking out seven. Vargas also helped himself out at the plate with a two-run single in the fourth inning.

On Thursday, the Florida Marlins designated veteran Al Leiter for assignment and recalled Vargas from Double-A Carolina. The 22-year-old lefty, the Marlins' second-round pick in 2004, has made a rapid ascent to the majors. He was 1-0 with a 2.84 ERA in three starts at Double-A Carolina, following successful stints earlier in 2005 at high Class-A Jupiter and Class-A Greensboro.
