Matt Murton

4/3/2006

Murton, in his first opening day as a major leaguer, capped a five-run first inning by the Cubs with a three-run homer off Cincinnati starter Aaron Harang. In the bottom of the first, Murton slammed into the scoreboard in the left-field wall to catch Austin Kearns' fly with the bases loaded.

If there were doubts about Murton's readiness to take over in left field for the Cubs this spring, the 24-year-old prospect has done all he can to alleviate them. Murton is 9-for-20 with three doubles, a homer and two RBIs in the early going of spring games.

With the trade of Todd Hollandsworth to Atlanta, Murton has been called up from Triple-A Iowa to fill the empty roster spot. He should see plenty of action in left field now that both Hollandsworth and Matt Lawton have been traded in the past week.

With Jerry Hairston's activation from the 15-day disabled list on Friday, the Chicago Cubs have opened a roster spot by optioning Murton back to Triple-A Iowa. The 23-year-old outfielder has appeared in 23 games with the major league club this season, going 19-for-56 (.339) with one home run, four RBI and 11 strikeouts.

Murton notched the first home run of his major league career, belting a solo shot to deep right in the second inning of Monday's loss to the Houston Astros. The Cubs' rookie outfielder, who batted leadoff in the contest, finished the game 2-for-5.

Murton got the starting nod in Monday's meeting against the Cincinnati Reds and took full advantage of the playing time, notching a career-high four hits in a 9-4 victory. The Cubs' rookie outfielder, who was recalled just prior to the All-Star break, is 7-for-17 (.412) with an RBI and three strikeouts in seven games with the major league club.

The struggling Corey Patterson was optioned to Triple-A Iowa on Thursday, opening a spot on the Cubs' roster for Murton, who was recalled from Double-A West Tenn. In 78 games with the minor league club this season, the outfielder was batting .342 with eight home runs and 46 RBI.
