Whiteside has been optioned to Triple-A Ottawa by the Baltimore Orioles, opening a spot on the roster for fellow catcher Javy Lopez, who was activated from the 15-day disabled list on Monday. In just six games during his brief stint with the major league club, Whiteside went 3-for-8 with an RBI.

On Sunday, the Baltimore Orioles placed catcher Geronimo Gil on the 15-day disabled list with a sprained thumb and recalled Whiteside from Triple-A Ottawa. The 25-year-old catcher was batting .263 with four home runs and 22 RBI in 63 games for Ottawa.
