After placing Runelvys Hernandez on the 15-day disabled list Friday, the Royals recalled lefthanded pitcher J.P. Howell to take Hernandez' place in the rotation. Howell, who is 1-4 with a 7.68 ERA for the Royals this season, will be thrown right into the fire, starting against the Yankees on Saturday.

The Kansas City Royals optined Howell to Triple-A Omaha on Saturday. The rookie pitcher is 1-4 with a 7.68 ERA in eight starts with Kansas City.

The Royals called up Howell from Triple-A Omaha on Saturday, and the 22-year-old lefthander got his first major league start and first win on Saturday night against the Diamondbacks. Howell worked five innings and gave up just four hits and one earned run while striking out eight. In three minor league stops this season, Howell went 6-1 with a 2.34 ERA with 73 strikeouts in 69.1 innings.
