Rick Short

9/24/2005

Short will need surgery on a torn left labrum suffered in Friday's game against the New York Mets, and is expected to miss up to six months. The 32 year-old Short finally made the majors this season after playing 12 years and collecting more than 1,000 hits in the minors. Called up in June and then again in September, Short had six hits in 15 AB with the Nationals, including home runs off of John Smoltz and Dontrelle Willis.

Short, who made his major league debut with the Washington Nationals at age 32 in July, was recalled from Triple-A New Orleans on Friday. He finished the minor league season with hitting percentages of .383/.456/.569 in 108 games for New Orleans. In his earlier stint with the Nationals, he was 1-for-2 with a walk and an RBI.

Short has been optioned to Triple-A New Orleans by the Washington Nationals, opening a spot on the roster for second baseman Jose Vidro, who was activated from the 15-day disabled list on Tuesday. During his two brief stints with the major league club, Short appeared in just three games, going 1-for-2 with a walk and RBI.

The Washington Nationals have purchased Short's contract from Triple-A New Orleans, filling the roster spot of outfielder Ryan Church, who was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a slight shoulder separation. The 32-year-old first baseman made his major league debut earlier this month, notching an RBI single in his only at-bat.

After parts of 12 seasons in the minors, Short's stint in the majors barely lasted 48 hours. The Washington Nationals designated the 32-year-old infielder for assignment on Saturday. No matter whether he ever surfaces again in the majors, he leaves with a 1.000 career average (1-for-1) and a major league RBI.

Short, who is in his 12th season in the minor leagues and never has appeared in the majors, was recalled by the Washington Nationals Wednesday after the club outrighted lefthander C.J. Nitkowski to Triple-A New Orleans. The 32-year-old infielder was hitting .341 with 16 doubles, five homers and 30 RBI for New Orleans. He's waited a long time to make his major league debut.
