Brian McCann

7/3/2006

McCann was selected to his first All-Star team Sunday and will be a reserve catcher for the National League. He is hitting .354 with five homers and 23 RBIs this season.

5/27/2006

McCann was placed on the 15-day disabled list by the Atlanta Braves on Saturday, due to a sprained left ankle. The 22-year-old catcher suffered the injury during a collision with Arizona's Eric Byrnes in a 13-0 Atlanta loss on May 20. He has made one pinch-hit appearance since the play.

McCann, the National League's leading hitter, left Saturday's 13-0 loss to Arizona with a sprained left ankle after a play at the plate in the fourth inning. The injury occurred when Arizona's Eric Byrnes ran into McCann at the plate, scoring the game's first run. McCann was blocking the plate and dropped the ball after he was hit. He then had to be helped from the field.

McCann went 3-for-5, hit a three-run homer and drove in a career-high five runs in Atlanta's 11-8 victory over Florida Monday night. The Atlanta catcher has hit safely in eight of his last nine games, batting .438 (14-for-32) with four doubles, two homers and 12 RBIs. For the season, he is the National League batting leader at .352, with five home runs and 19 RBIs in 34 games.

The Atlanta Braves recalled McCann from Double-A Mississippi Wednesday, after Braves starting catcher Johnny Estrada suffered a concussion and whiplash and Eddie Perez returned to the disabled list with a shoulder injury. McCann is one of Atlanta's top prospects and was hitting .265 with six homers and 26 RBI in 48 games for Mississippi.
