Mike Morse

7/6/2006

Morse will have arthroscopic surgery to repair cartilage damage in his right knee and is expected to be out 4-6 weeks, the team said Wednesday. The 24-year-old shortstop was optioned to Triple-A Tacoma last week where he sustained the injury.

Morse maintains that he continues to test positive for a steroid he used in November 2003 to help him recover from a torn thigh muscle. The Mariners' infielder said he was desperate to beat the lingering injury, which might have ended his career, and that he hasn't used any product that might generate a positive drug test since then. He said that he failed two drug tests in the minor leagues last season for the same reason.

Major League Baseball has suspended Morse for 10 days after he failed a drug test for performance-enhancing drugs. The suspension was announced Wednesday, and it was the first penalty administered since Morse's Seattle teammate, pitcher Ryan Franklin, was banned for 10 days on August 2.

After batting .357 in 26 June contests, Morse has come back to earth, and the Seattle Mariners are weighing their options with the promising rookie. The M's have decided that shortstop will be the domain of fellow rookie Yunieksy Betancourt, the slick-fielding 23-year-old prospect who was recalled in late July. Morse is working with an outfielder's glove during practice time, and he may get a look in left field.

Morse, Seattle's rookie shortstop, could make Mariners fans forget about injured veteran Pokey Reese. The 23-year-old rookie enjoyed back-to-back three-hit games against Philadelphia on Wednesday and Thursday, which included his first major league home run in Wednesday's 5-1 Mariners victory. In 14 games since his recall, Morse is 18-for-43 (.419) with five runs scored, four RBI, four walks and a .480 on-base percentage.

Morse picked up his first major league hit on Friday, going 1-for-3 in Seattle's loss to the Tampa Bay Devil Rays.

Morse, a 23-year-old shortstop prospect acquired from the Chicago White Sox last June, has been recalled from Triple-A Tacoma to assume the starting role in Seattle. The righthanded-hitting Morse was batting .253 with four home runs and 23 RBI in 49 games in the Pacific Coast League this season.
