Luis Rodriguez

9/7/2005

Rodriguez, who was a valuable fill-in when injuries waylaid the Twins' infield this summer, was recalled on Tuesday. The 25-year-old switch-hitter batted .254 with a .318 on-base percentage in 67 games for Minnesota. In 40 games at Triple-A Rochester, Rodriguez hit .309 with a .381 OBP.

On Sunday, the Minnesota Twins recalled top pitching prospect Scott Baker and optioned Rodriguez back to Triple-A Rochester. The 25-year-old infielder has been a valuable fill-in for a Twins team that has been strapped by injuries, particularly in the infield. He batted .254 with 15 runs scored and 11 RBI in 142 at-bats with Minnesota. Rodriguez played at second, third and short.

With Michael Cuddyer going on the 15-day disabled list over the weekend for a bruised left hand, Rodriguez is likely to get most of the starts at third base for the foreseeable future. The 25-year-old rookie continues to be a key player in the Twins' infield, filling in wherever injuries have struck over the last month.

Rodriguez' run of starts at second base has been steady, with Nick Punto and Luis Rivas on the disabled list and Brent Abernathy nursing a sore shoulder all week. On Friday, Abernathy went on the DL with his shoulder injury, so the Minnesota Twins activated Rivas for the weekend series against San Diego. Shortstop Juan Castro also is out for a few days with a tender left ankle, so look for Rodriguez to start at short and Rivas to play second this weekend.

Rodriguez has been getting most of the starts with second basemen Luis Rivas and Nick Punto on the disabled list. The 24-year-old Twins rookie has gone 9-for-23 (.391) with a pair of doubles and three runs scored since Punto went down and second-base duties fell to Rodriguez and veteran Brent Abernathy.

Rodriguez was in line for backup duty when he was recalled on May 19, but with Nick Punto joining Luis Rivas on the disabled list, he and veteran Brent Abernathy are in line to share starts at second base. Rodriguez is 2-for-9 (.222) in seven games since arriving from Triple-A Rochester.

On Thursday, the Minnesota Twins demoted promising shortstop prospect Jason Bartlett to Triple-A Rochester, so that he could play every day after losing the Twins' starting job to Juan Castro. To take Bartlett's roster spot, the Twins promoted Rodriguez, who will serve as a backup infielder. Rodriguez was batting .287 with a .359 on-base percentage in 33 games for Rochester.
