Jorge Campillo

8/3/2005

The Seattle Mariners placed Campillo on the 15-day disabled list with an elbow strain on Wednesday, the day after he left his first major league start with a tender throwing elbow. The 26-year-old righthander had to leave after working a scoreless first inning against Detroit.

On Monday, the Seattle Mariners released veteran Aaron Sele and recalled Campillo from Triple-A Tacoma to replace him in the M's rotation. At Tacoma, the 26-year-old righthander was 4-1 with a 2.71 ERA in 12 starts. Campillo is scheduled to start for Seattle on Tuesday in Detroit.

The Mariners optioned Campillo to Triple-A Tacoma, less than a week after his first recall to the majors. The 26-year-old righthander worked one scoreless inning in his major league debut, allowing a walk and striking out one against San Diego on Friday.

With Julio Mateo leaving the Seattle bullpen to start against the New York Yankees on Tuesday, Campillo will be recalled from Triple-A Tacoma Tuesday to fill the opening in the pen. Campillo has been a starter at Tacoma, making seven starts and going 2-1 with a 3.05 ERA. He has fanned 29 and walked seven in 38.1 innings.

Mateo is starting for Pineiro, who was demoted to Tacoma briefly to work out some mechanical bugs in his game. Pineiro won't be there much longer than a week, but either Mateo or Campillo could get a start or two beyond Tuesday's as a fill-in for Pineiro.
