Mike Burns

6/26/2006

Burns was optioned to Triple-A Louisville on Monday. The 27-year-old reliever has made 11 appearances during three stints with the Reds this season, posting an 8.78 ERA through 13 1-3 innings. He pitched two shutout innings in his last outing on Thursday, giving up two hits in a 6-2 loss to the New York Mets.

Burns was recalled by the Reds from Triple-A Louisville on Sunday after placing Brandon Claussen on the 15-day disabled list. The right-hander is expected to be used out of the bullpen.

The Cincinnati Reds have claimed Burns off waivers from the Houston Astros. The 27-year-old right-hander made 27 relief appearances for the Astros in 2005, posting a 4.94 ERA and a .238 opponent batting average. He was touched for six home runs in just 31 innings.

The Houston Astros recalled Burns over the weekend to provide some relief for the Astros' overworked bullpen. The 26-year-old righthander posted a 10.13 ERA in four relief appearances during a mid-May stint with Houston. He has been successful this spring as the closer for Triple-A Round Rock.

Opening a spot on the roster for Wandy Rodriguez, who will get the starting nod against the Chicago Cubs on Monday, the Houston Astros have optioned Burns to Triple-A Round Rock. The righthander has appeared in four games with the Astros this season, allowing six runs on 10 hits -- including three home runs -- over 5.1 innings.

One of the top relievers in the Pacific Coast League this season, Burns has been recalled from Triple-A Round Rock by the Houston Astros. The righthander, who takes the roster spot of the struggling Brandon Duckworth, is 2-0 with a 0.48 ERA and 10 saves for the minor league club in 2005. He has fanned 21 batters in 18.2 innings of work.

With Brad Lidge having a firm grasp on the Astros' closer job, the team won't turn to Burns in save situations. He will pitch in middle relief for the time being.
