To make room for Joel Peralta on the 40-man roster prior to his recall from Triple-A Salt Lake, the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim have designated Prieto for assignment. The 32-year-old outfielder is coming off his first taste of the major leagues a week ago, and he was 0-for-2 in two games during his brief stay.

The first cup of coffee in the majors for the 32-year-old Prieto lasted roughly three days, as the Angels' outfielder was optioned to Triple-A Salt Lake after the Angels defeated Cleveland on Monday night. The Angels needed to make room for Tuesday night's starting pitcher, 22-year-old Ervin Santana, a premier pitching prospect who will be recalled from Double-A Arkansas to make his major league debut against the Indians.

Prieto was 0-for-2 in two games during his brief stay with the Angels.

The 32-year-old Prieto made his major league debut on Saturday when he started in center field in the second game of the Angels' doubleheader against the Detroit Tigers. Prieto went 0-for-1 with a sacrifice in his debut.

The 32-year-old Prieto, who made his Triple-A debut in 1996, is getting his first taste of the majors. The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim put righthander Kelvim Escobar on the 15-day disabled list Thursday and recalled Prieto to take his roster spot. In his 13th minor league season, the lefthanded outfielder was hitting .279 with nine stolen bases, 19 runs scored and eight RBI in 25 games for Triple-A Salt Lake.

Prieto starts his first major league stint as a bench player.
