Robinson Tejeda

6/25/2006

Tejeda was sent to Triple-A Oklahoma on Sunday, just one day after he was recalled and made a start against the Colorado Rockies.

The Texas Rangers have placed right-handed reliever Antonio Alfonseca on the 15-day disabled list with a sore elbow and have replaced him with Tejeda. The 24-year-old Tejeda was recalled in time to start for the Rangers Friday night in Houston against the Astros. In two starts this season, Tejeda is 1-1 with a 9.00 ERA.

Tejeda's shoulder felt fine after a bullpen session on Tuesday, and the Phillies' righthander will be used out of the bullpen starting Thursday. He hasn't pitched since August 30, and getting his pitch count back up in order to start would take most of what is left to the season.

Lefthander Randy Wolf has decided to undergo season-ending surgery on his ailing pitching elbow, meaning Tejeda will remain in the starting rotation going forward. The rookie righthander has posted a 1-0 record and 2.03 ERA in 11 appearances this year, including three starts.

After Tejeda pitched five scoreless innings as a spot starter against Texas on June 8, the rookie righthander will step into the rotation for injured lefthander Randy Wolf. Tejeda has been chosen to face Barry Zito and the Oakland Athletics in Oakland Friday.

Because of Saturday's doubleheader, the Phillies will need a spot starter for Wednesday's meeting with the Texas Rangers. According to manager Charlie Manuel, Tejeda will get the nod. The righthander has made eight relief appearances this season, posting a 4.50 ERA. He has fanned nine batters and walked 12 in 10 innings of work.
