Tadahito Iguchi

7/10/2006

Iguchi hit a bases-loaded single to give the White Sox a 6-5 win over Boston in 19 innings on Sunday, ending the 6-hour, 19-minute game. The Chicago second baseman was 2-for-7 in the game with a homer and two RBIs. The contest was the White Sox's longest since May 1991 against Milwaukee.

Iguchi had the first multihomer game of his career and had a career-high six RBIs in the White Sox' 7-0 victory over the Cubs on Saturday.

On Tuesday, Iguchi enjoyed the best night of his brief North American career. The White Sox' second baseman was a perfect 4-for-4 with his first home run in a 5-4 victory over Kansas City. Iguchi drilled a two-out, two-run homer in the third inning to tie the game at 2-2, and he added three singles and scored the deciding run in the Sox' two-run eighth.

Iguchi is on a roll at the moment. In his last five games, the second sacker is 13-for-21 (.619) with six runs scored and six RBI. He's also walked three times and stolen two bases.

Iguchi came down with a sore right knee on Tuesday night, after a collision at second base with Oakland's Nick Swisher, and another one at home plate when he ran into A's catcher Jason Kendall. The White Sox' second baseman stayed in the game, but he was on the bench for the series finale against the A's on Wednesday.

The second baseman's status for Friday night's game against Detroit is uncertain. Iguchi had the off day on Thursday to rest his knee.

Despite an 8-for-16 surge over the White Sox' last four games, Iguchi was given a day off on Thursday afternoon. He and the White Sox had played eight straight days before Thursday's matinee with Detroit, and the Sox' second baseman had the opportunity to watch from the bench.

After starting his major league career by going 0-for-5, Iguchi has gone 16-for-46 (.348) since then. He's a .314 hitter on the season, with three doubles, three RBI and six runs scored.

After going hitless in his first six plate appearances in the majors, Iguchi has gone 7-for-17 with three doubles for the White Sox. The Japanese second baseman has impressed White Sox GM Ken Williams with his ability to make adjustments in the early going. He might look bad on one pitch and be ready for it the next time around.

There will be ups and downs for Iguchi, who doesn't know American League pitchers and must adjust to sinkers that are seldom thrown in Japan. Still, Iguchi's performance thus far suggests he will be a productive big league hitter.
