Matt Cain

6/20/2006

Cain carried a no-hitter into the eighth inning and struck out a career-high 10 batters as San Francisco beat the Los Angeles Angels 2-1 on Monday night. The rookie right-hander allowed no hits through 7 2-3 innings before Chone Figgins lined a clean single to center to break up the bid. It was the longest no-hit bid in the majors this season.

The San Francisco Chronicle is reporting that Cain will not make his scheduled start Monday against the Houston Astros. The highly touted rookie has been struggling and Brad Hennessey will make the start instead. Cain has allowed 13 earned runs over his last two outings, and he's 1-5 with a 7.04 ERA in seven starts this season.

Cain secured his first major league win on Sunday, limiting Arizona to three hits and a single run over seven innings for a 3-2 San Francisco victory. The promising 20-year-old righthander is 1-1 after his first two big league starts, posting a 2.25 ERA against Colorado and Arizona.
