Shoppach was recalled from Triple-A Buffalo on Friday by the Indians when catcher Tim Laker was designated for assignment. Shoppach hit .282 (22-for-78) with four home runs and nine RBIs in 21 games for Buffalo after being sent down on May 20.

Shoppach, the Red Sox' most advanced catching prospect, was recalled from Triple-A Pawtucket on Tuesday. The 25-year-old backstop finished the minor league season with a .253 average, 26 homers and 75 RBI for Pawtucket in 102 games. Earlier in the season with Boston, Shoppach was 0-for-11 with six strikeouts in six contests.

Shoppach, recalled to fill in for backup catcher Doug Mirabelli for the last two-plus weeks, was returned to Triple-A Pawtucket Sunday, when Mirabelli came off the DL. Shoppach, a highly regarded catching prospect, went 0-for-11 with six strikeouts in six games for Boston. Shoppach was hit by a pitch, so he managed to get on base once during his first stint in the major leagues.

Shoppach, who was recalled a little more than a week ago after backup catcher Doug Mirabelli sprained his left wrist, will be around for a while longer. Mirabelli found out that he will have to wear his removable splint at least through Friday.
