McCarthy, a promising right-hander who would be a starter in most big league rotations, worked three perfect innings in relief to pick up the "W" in the White Sox's 10-4 season-opening win over Cleveland. He fanned two in relief of starter Mark Buehrle.

McCarthy turned his the longest outing of his young major league career, tossing eight strong innings -- and matching Minnesota ace Johan Santana -- in Thursday's meeting with the Twins. The White Sox' 22-year-old righthander allowed just one run on four hits, struck out four and walked one, but did not figure into the decision.

A week ago, White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen hinted that McCarthy might move into the rotation after Chicago clinched a postseason berth. Now the promising righthander might go into the rotation to help secure a playoff spot. In two starts and two relief appearances since his recall on August 30, the 22-year-old McCarthy is 2-0 with a 1.16 ERA over 23.1 innings. He has blanked Texas and Boston in impressive road starts.

White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen hinted Friday that the club may put McCarthy into the starting rotation once they have clinched a spot in the postseason. The pitcher has done quite well in his last two outings, holding opponents scoreless on just five hits in 14.2 innings.

For a second straight start in a row on Monday, McCarthy turned in a scoreless outing against an offensive juggernaut in a hitter-friendly ballpark. After limiting Texas to two hits over seven innings at home last Tuesday, the rookie righthander held Boston scoreless on three hits over seven frames at Fenway Park on Monday afternoon. He sparked the Chicago White Sox to a 5-3 victory.

McCarthy, who was recalled between games of the Chicago White Sox' doubleheader with Texas on Tuesday, worked 7.2 scoreless innings in Game 2 to claim his first major league victory. The 22-year-old righthander allowed just two hits and a walk en route to the 8-0 win. He improved to 1-1 with a 6.19 ERA in six big league starts.

The Chicago White Sox optioned McCarthy to Triple-A Charlotte after he struggled in Monday's 10-8 victory over the Tampa Bay Devil Rays. The promising righthander, who turns 22 on Thursday, was roughed up for eight hits and five runs over three innings by the Rays. He returns to Charlotte with an 0-1 mark and 8.14 ERA in five starts for Chicago.

Orlando Hernandez will be on the disabled list for longer than expected -- possibly through the All-Star break -- and McCarthy could get an extended look with the Chicago White Sox if he pitches reasonably well. The 21-year-old rookie debuted impressively against the Cubs on May 22, but has been roughed up in his other two starts for Chicago this season. He is 0-1 with an 8.40 ERA in 15 innings of work.

With Orlando Hernandez on the disabled list for a second time in a month, the Chicago White Sox once again recalled McCarthy to replace him. The 21-year-old righthander arrives from Triple-A Charlotte, where he was 3-7 with a 5.48 ERA. In an earlier two-start stint with the White Sox, the rookie was 0-1 with a 6.97 ERA. He was impressive in a cross-town showdown with the Cubs in his major league debut before getting roughed up by the Rangers on May 27.

He was as poised at Wrigley Field as he was in spring training, when he made quite an impression on Sox coaches.

The 21-year-old righthander faces a big assignment in his major league debut, but he most impressed Sox coaches with his poise during spring training. The Sox believe he is equipped for the start.
