Keiichi Yabu

10/18/2005

The Oakland Athletics have decided not exercise their 2006 option on Yabu, who arrived from Japan after signing with the A's before the 2005 season. In his first major league season in North America, the 37-year-old righthander went 4-0 with a 4.50 ERA in 40 relief appearances. Hitters batted .287 and slugged .439 off him.

Yabu was scheduled to make his first start for Oakland on Wednesday, but that plan may have changed after the 36-year-old righthander had to work two innings in relief in Monday's 6-4 victory over Boston. Yabu earned the win, but had to throw 43 pitches. It's possible that Seth Etherton will make the Wednesday start for Oakland instead.

The A's bullpen is thin because of injuries to Kiko Calero and Justin Duchscherer. Either Yabu or Etherton will start on Wednesday while the other gets some innings in the pen.

After working effectively in 11 relief appearances for Oakland, Yabu will make his first major league start in North America on Wednesday against Boston. The 36-year-old righthander, who is 2-0 with a 2.55 ERA for Oakland this season, will start in place of injured righthander Rich Harden.

Yabu could move into the Oakland starting rotation if Rich Harden is sidelined by a strained oblique muscle. Yabu is 2-0 with a 2.55 ERA in 11 games so far this season, his first in the majors after spending the previous 11 seasons with the Hanshin Tigers in Japan.
