The Padres claimed Young off waivers from Baltimore on Thursday. The 25-year-old first baseman made his big league debut in 2005, batting .303 with one homer and three RBIs in 14 games.

Young, believed to be the heaviest major leaguer ever based on listed weight, stroked his first major league home run for the Baltimore Orioles on Tuesday night. The 6-foot-5, 322-pound first baseman stroked a solo shot off Texas righthander R.A. Dickey in the Orioles' 4-3 win. He also led off the ninth with a single, and his pinch-runner, Ed Rogers, tallied the game-winning run.

On Thursday, the Baltimore Orioles recalled Young, a 6-foot-5, 300-pound power prospect who hit .288 with 13 dingers and 81 RBI in 123 games at Triple-A Ottawa.
